Most people realize that in order to increase their intelligence test scores, they had to do mental exercises like reading more, playing strategy-based games, doing crossword puzzles and other similar activities. But did you know that the kinds of food that you eat also affect your IQ?

In order for the brain to function properly, it needs to have an adequate supply of neurotransmitters, whose primary job is to carry impulses from one neuron to another. There are four neurotransmitters that the brain needs: acetylcholine, dopamine, serotonin, and gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA.

All these neurotransmitters can be found in abundant amounts in certain kinds of foods. So it’s just common sense that if you want to boost your IQ, you should eat the foods that contain the most amounts of these neurotransmitters.

Acetylcholine can be found in egg yolks, fish, peanuts, meat and other foods that are typically rich in protein. Studies show that this chemical is in charge of the memory function in the brain. The more acetylcholine you get from your food, the better your recall will be.

Dopamine provides the brain’s energy and is responsible for learning and attention span. Just like acetylcholine, It can be found in high-protein foods, as well as avocado, pumpkin seeds and black-eyed peas.

Serotonin is most known for its sleep-inducing properties, but it is also vital to the self-restoration process of the brain. Therefore, having high serotonin levels means you are able to think more clearly. Foods that contain serotonin include brown rice, banana, cottage cheese, salmon, and foods that are high in carbohydrates such as potatoes, breads and cereals.

Finally, GABA facilitates the harmonic operation of brainwaves. It can be acquired from citrus fruits, broccoli, molasses, spinach, nuts, and oatmeal.

By increasing your intake of the abovementioned foods, you can definitely boost your brainpower and get a higher score the next time you take an intelligence test.
