I recently came across an online study claiming that one’s intelligence quotient can actually be predicted based on the ratio between his ring finger and middle finger. The idea is somewhat ridiculous yet very interesting at the same time and so my curiosity was piqued and I kept reading.
Basically, what they did was to measure the participants’ index and ring fingers down to 1/100 of a millimeter, then divided the length of the index finger with the length of the ring finger. The resulting digit ratio is then compared to the individual’s IQ test results. What they found was quite remarkable.
Those individuals who had a smaller digit ratio, or whose ring fingers were longer than the index fingers, generally showed a greater aptitude towards mathematics rather than linguistics. Conversely, the individuals who had a higher digit ratio, or who had longer index fingers than ring fingers, did considerably better in the literacy part of the test.
It is also notable that most of those who had low digit ratios were male, and most of those with high digit ratios were female. But the study reveals it is not gender which is the deciding factor here but the person’s prenatal exposure to male and female hormones.
An in-depth analysis of the results would be required to grasp the full impact of these results but basically, it suggests that if an unborn child is exposed more to testosterone, his or her intelligence quotient will likely lean towards maths, and if the child is prenatally exposed to estrogen and progesterone, he or she will show more proficiency with linguistics.
By no means does this study recommend that intelligence quotient tests be replaced with finger measurements but it does open the doors to new areas of cognitive insights that were not possible before.
